I tried. I really tried hard. I seriously did not want to believe that Trump and the rest of the Conservative Right could possibly be as bad as the Liberal Left has been claiming. I mean, nobody could be THAT bad, right? Seriously, how could he possibly be as bad as they claimed? It had to be all posturing and rhetoric on the part of the Liberals, right? I know Trump is scary, and I know he was a terrible choice to lead our nation, but could he really be as bad as they said he was?
Then it started happening. Heads up folks, he is every bit as bad as we feared.
This week Trump installed a staunch opponent of the EPA and supporter of Big Oil and Big Coal by the name of Scott Pruitt to lead the Environmental Protection Agency. This made no sense to me, and I am sure made no sense to most Americans. Why would he do this? What could possibly make Trump believe that Pruitt was a good choice to lead the EPA? Pruitt himself has filed no less than 14 separate law suites AGAINST the EPA. In fact 7 of those law suits are still pending, which means that Pruitt will ultimately be both the Plaintiff and Defendant in those cases.
Protests sprang up around the country as the People tried desperately to instill some sense into Congress. My Libertarian friends all shouted “Great! He should put an opponent of the EPA in charge of it!” Really? Why? I have never heard a more convoluted piece of logic.
Then the end-game became clear. Trump installed Pruitt so that he would not oppose anything Trump wanted to do that might go against the Environment. As soon as Pruitt was officially in charge of the EPA, Trump signed the Order rolling back the clean water protections enacted by the Obama administration. Removing restrictions on what kind of toxic waste, and how much toxic waste the coal industry can dump into our rivers and streams.
The coal industry uttered a collective cheer for Trump, while environmentalists around the country wept. Don’t be fooled for one moment my friends. Rolling back those clean water regulations had absolutely nothing to do with making Government smaller, and everything to do with lowering the cost of coal production – at the expense of the environment. It was a heinous act committed by a greedy billionaire intent on sacking our great Country for his own profits.
Donald Trump is going to screw the planet in lieu of the almighty dollar – just as predicted. This is a blatant example of Big Business Cronyism at its worse. One of what I am sure will be many examples of Trump (or his rich white friends) profiting from actions he takes as president. There is no barrier he will not remove to increase his profits. No lie he will not tell to line his pockets.
Let’s not forget, Trump is the guy who ran for President on a promise of bringing jobs back to America, after decades of having his own clothing lines manufactured in sweat shops in China. If you believe his motivation in regards to this action was noble, and all about reducing the size of government, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you.
We cannot be complacent. We cannot rely on faith that our Government will any longer do the right thing. We certainly can no longer trust our President in that regard. We must be vigilant. We must not let Trump and his cronies carve up and sell off our environment one regulation at a time.
Call your Congressmen. Call your Senator. Tell them this kind of action is not acceptable. Better yet, join the Resistance. There are multiple organizations popping up to help fight the Trump agenda. http://indvisibleguide.com is a good place to start for more information.
I also received a tip recently that I will pass along to you here: If you send a text to this phone number with your zip code: (520)-200-2223 you will receive a text back that lists all your Representatives and their phone numbers. It’s very cool, it works, and is not a scam.
If we’re destroying our trees and destroying our environment and hurting animals and hurting one another and all that stuff, there’s got to be a very powerful energy to fight that. I think we need more love in the world. We need more kindness, more compassion, more joy, more laughter. I definitely want to contribute to that.
